When I started my weight loss journey I began with a lot of cardio and weights. Over time my progress started to plateau and to be honest, weights and running just got a bit boring for me.
One of the key benefits of Muay Thai training is that it engages the whole body and multiple different muscle groups. The punches, kicks, elbows and knees that are used in Muay Thai all require the use of the legs, core, and upper body, providing a full-body workout that targets all major muscle groups.
Here's how Muay Thai can help you lose weight:
What is Muay Thai
Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, a martial art that can be a very effective way to lose weight. The high-intensity, full-body workout you get from Muay Thai burns a significant number of calories and can help to speed up weight loss.
My Muay Thai Weight Loss Journey
Cardio is a huge part of muay thai but if you're actively learning new techniques and having fun whilst you train, it beats staring into the distance running on a treadmill any day.
The combination of strength and cardio training in Muay Thai can help to increase muscle mass and reduce body fat, leading to weight loss.
I started muay thai in 2020, just with a goal of getting fitter. If just getting fitter and having a bit of self defence is something you're looking for then muay thai is the perfect way to do this.
What I didn't know at the time is how much confidence the sport would give me and progress my training in other areas. When I started muay thai, I switched up my weight training routine to help build strength and stamina.
Over the course of two years I had lost 154lbs and fell back in love with training in every area.
So much so that I decided to head out to Thailand to train, to test our muay thai fitness apparel and to test how far I'd actually come in terms of my fitness levels.
Visiting Thailand to Train Muay Thai
I spent a month in Thailand, training at some of the most famous muay thai gyms in Thailand. It was amazing to put myself to the test and see how far I'd actually come.
Able to keep up with sparring rounds, morning 5-7k runs and two pad sessions per day. Also, sometimes clinch training, but we won't talk about how strong the Thai's are in the clinch. 😂
Here are some of my tips from my first time training in Thailand.
Another benefit of Muay Thai is that it is a fun and enjoyable form of exercise. Rather than just going running and making your whole weight loss journey about losing weight, as you're enjoying the training and learning new techniques, it's easy to forget why you're actually training so it becomes very fun.
Overall, Muay Thai is an excellent way to lose weight and get in shape. The full-body workout, high-intensity cardio, and fun-filled training are all great benefits that make Muay Thai an excellent choice for anyone looking to lose weight and improve their fitness.
