BKFC Thailand 5, Buakaw vs Saenchai, words I thought I'd never heard in a sentence together but here we are. Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship headed to Pattaya to host a fight for the ages, but was it really worth the hype? And was it worth it?
For those that may have stumbled across this article being a BKFC fan and not really knowing too much about Muay Thai, Buakaw and Saenchai are two legends in Thailand and the Muay Thai world.
First of all I'm a huge fan of all martial arts, in any way shape or form. Believe it or not, I'm also a fan of the crossover fights you see more of these days. Whilst they may not be the best in terms of quality, it brings more attention to combat sports.
Think of it this way, someone may watch a clip from one of these crossover or exhibition fights and may end up taking up martial arts.
Okay let's get into this legendary Muay Thai fight.
Who is Buakaw Banchamek?
Buakaw Banchamek, born Sombat Banchamek on May 8, 1982, in Surin Province, Thailand, is a legendary Muay Thai fighter renowned for his exceptional skills and remarkable achievements in Muay Thai.
In December 2022 I watched Buakaw fight Oleksandr Yefimenko live at Rajadamnern stadium. When he walked out and entered the ring he just drew the attention of the room to him. If it's your first time discovering Buakaw then you're in luck because you've got a lot of footage to look back on.
Buakaw grew up in a rural village, developing a passion for Muay Thai at a young age, inspired by his local surroundings and the rich martial arts culture of Thailand. This isn't anything too crazy in Thailand. Fighters start at a really young age and often become the bread winner for their families.
His relentless dedication and rigorous training regimen eventually led him to become a dominant force in the sport. Buakaw's illustrious career includes multiple championships in prestigious events such as the K-1 World MAX, where he gained international acclaim for his striking prowess and strategic brilliance. With a blend of speed, power, and precision, Buakaw became a two-time K-1 World MAX Champion, solidifying his status as one of the greatest Muay Thai fighters of all time. His incredible journey and numerous accolades continue to inspire aspiring fighters and fans alike, making him a true icon in the world of martial arts.
Who is Saenchai? (Suphachai Saepong)
A living legend in the world of Muay Thai, Saenchai, or Saenchai PKSaenchaimuaythaigym. In Thailand and Muay Thai, traditionally, fighters go by their name followed by the name of their gym.
Saenchai was born July 30, 1980, in Buriram Province, Thailand. Growing up in a small village in northeastern Thailand, training rigorously under the guidance of his elder brother and renowned Muay Thai trainer.
Saenchai became a multiple-time world champion in various weight classes, earning titles in respected organisations such as Lumpinee Stadium, Rajadamnern Stadium, and the WBC Muaythai.
The Muay Thai legend's incredible agility, paired with his flawless technique and unorthodox fight style makes him a Muay Thai fans favourite. When Saenchai fights it really isn't like a fight at all, Saenchai plays with his opponents and puts on a technical masterclass for fans to behold.
His influence extends beyond the ring, as he has become a mentor and coach, guiding the next generation of fighters. Saenchai's journey from a humble village in Thailand to becoming a Muay Thai icon serves as an inspiring tale of talent, hard work, and passion for the ancient martial art.

Our thoughts on Buakaw vs Saenchai fight
In all honesty, I thought it was just going to be an exhibition fight. Ever since the fight was announced, I've had chats with fighters, people who've been involved with Muay Thai for a long time and they all thought the same too.
Well, Sanchai and Buakaw didn't hold back for this one like I thought they would. Kicks were thudding in at full power, Saenchai put on his usual technical show, skipping off to the side and flying up with the kicks.
Let's be honest now, everything about this fight was stacked against Saenchai. The clear size difference between the two, age and height. Saenchai is no stranger to fighting opponents that are much bigger than him, but everything just seemed to bounce off Buakaw.
With that being said, Saenchai handled it very well and still fought in his typical playful style.
It's unlikely to two will fight again as Buakaw said in his post fight speech that it's unlikely I will fight Saenchai again, he's a fighter I've studied a lot and looked upto.
