Us Muay Thai shorts lovers just can't get enough of the striking style that the art of 8-limbs has blessed us with.

Here's your ultimate 2023 guide on how to pick the best Muay Thai shorts, from the most stylish, practical and just about everything you need to know about Muay Thai Shorts.

What are the Best Muay Thai Shorts 2023?

Muay Thai shorts are now accessible around the world. With Muay Thai gaining immense popularity over the years, it's now easier than ever to get your hands on some cool shorts that will unleash your inner Nak Suu (warrior).

More fight brands have brought their own variation of traditional designs to the market. With some of the more modern brands creating unique stylish collections that will turn heads in the gym.

When picking some new muay thai shorts, make sure you go for satin or a satin-blend. These offer the most comfortable fit and tend to be more durable whilst not restricting movement.

Here are some of the best Muay Thai shorts from some of the most popular Muay Thai brands.

Twins Muay Thai Shorts 2023

Twins Special Muay Thai Shorts

Twins are one of the most prominent brands when it comes to Muay Thai gear. Favoured by the Thai's and even Rajadamnern Stadium, Twins has a wide range of designs that look great.

Twins are the go-to for many gyms and fighters in Thailand and can be found just about anywhere online.

Fairtex Muay Thai Shorts 2023

Fairtex Muay Thai Shorts

Fairtex Muay Thai shorts are another great choice. They sponsor loads of fighters, they aren't seen as much as Twins but they're up there with one of the most popular Muay Thai brands.

Twins shorts do tend to be quite accommodating for those with bigger legs due to their wider shape.

Their designs aren't as impressive as Twins or other brands on this list, they stick with a pretty standard style and branding across all of their range.

With that being said, they are a household name that has cemented themselves in the Muay Thai world for producing high quality gear.

Yokkao Muay Thai Shorts 2023

Yokkao have always known for being a bit more out their with its styles and designs. They sponsor many of the greatest Muay Thai fighters and produce some incredible quality looking gear.

They have a range of different designs, styles and out there graphics which give you plenty of choice depending on your preference.

Fluory Muay Thai Shorts 2023

Fluory have a very similar styling to Twins but have some really nice designs that stay true to Muay Thai roots which I personally really like.

Boon Muay thai Shorts 2023

Boon are still quite a newcomer to the market, launched in 2002 but they have put out some incredible quality shorts and have made some big moves with fighters like John Wayne Parr.

Honorable mention:

Muay Thai Flame Shorts

When I started GYM NASTY, I had the idea of developing performance optimised Muay Thai apparel that stayed true to Muay Thai culture and inspired people to keep on training.

Our motto Train Nasty, Live Fresh is reflected in our shorts. Flexible for even the most technical Muay Femur, loose fitting for the tall Muay Khao, quick drying so you don't have to wait around or dig out some old shorts to go and train in.

Our Muay Thai flame shorts were launched alongside our NAK SUU Muay Thai collection. Worn together or even on their own, our Muay Thai flame shorts will turn heads in the gym whilst you have the flexibility to throw those sky piercing knees or knockout head kicks.

The History of Muay Thai Shorts

Muay Thai has been around for over 2,000 years and has deep roots in Thai culture. Originally developed as a form of self-defense for the Thai military, soldiers would use Muay Thai techniques on the battlefield, especially in hand-to-hand combat when weapons were not available.

Muay Thai made its transition into a sport during the 19th century. Over the years it gained popularity throughout Thailand and took inspiration from western boxing such as rules and protective equipment.

Along with rules, and protective equipment, Muay Thai also took inspiration from western boxing shorts. Muay Thai took the western boxing shorts and completely re-imagined them into what we see today. Loud designs, coloured graphics and inscriptions.

Western boxing shorts tend to be a lot longer in length, whereas Muay Thai shorts are a lot shorter to accommodate for high kicks and the hot weather in Thailand.

Today, with the wealth of amazing Muay Thai brands, you can find a fit and look that you love. You can find your perfect style below.

Rules on wearing Muay Thai shorts

When I first started training Muay Thai a couple of years ago, this was something that crossed my mind. With Muay Thai being rich in culture and traditions, I wasn't sure if there were any rules regarding Muay Thai shorts.

Rest assured there aren't. If you train Muay Thai, then you should definitely wear Muay Thai shorts.

Kids in Thailand wear the shorts when they first start training which tends to be around 6 years old. So don't worry about wearing your Muay Thai shorts, there are no specific or strict rules.

It is worth noting though, some gyms in the West may adopt a ranking system, this can often be the colour of the shorts signifying an instructor. Always check with your gym to see if they have a uniform.

Different Muay Thai Short Styles

There are different styles of Muay Thai shorts and these vary throughout the plethora of brands. The different styles tend to sit in 3 main categories and each offer their own unique differences.

Short Muay Thai Shorts

One of the most popular styles of Muay Thai shorts is that... Short. They offer great flexibility when throwing high kicks, so there's no wonder why these are so popular.

With the astronomical growth of Muay Thai in recent years, making its way into the Western limelight with ONE Championship more people from around the world are watching Muay Thai. Popular fighters like Rodtang can be seen fighting in shorter shorts, often pulling them up when they're about to step up the pace.

Long Muay Thai Shorts

The longer style shorts aren't much longer, but they offer more leg room for those fighters with bigger legs. The longer style can often be associated with the Muay Thai brands that have been around a while and offer more traditional styling most of the time.

Wide Muay Thai Shorts

Wider shorts often sit in a weird area, sometimes being long and sometimes short. The main body of the shorts is a lot wider and they tend to flair out a little unlike the long and short that tend to be straight.

Buying Muay Thai Shorts Online

Muay Thai gear is readily available online, with tonnes of brands, the choices are endless. As you can see throughout this blog, there are various different brands that people know, and there are more newcomers to the market putting out some amazing gear.

It can be tricky buying Muay Thai shorts online and finding the right fit for you. Like with many clothes these days, different brands offer different fits, and this gets even more confusing when you throw in the style.

Luckily, sites tend to have a size guide based on your weight, height and length.

Here's how you can find the best fitting Muay Thai shorts online:

  • Head over to your local fight wear store to try on their shorts for size. This will give you a good indication of the fittings for the different brands. Once you've found the right fit for you, you might want to check online and see if you can find them cheaper. If the price isn't too different, you may as well support your local store and buy them there.
  • Checking your current pair if you already own some is a really good reference point. It might not give you the exact measurements of the shorts that you're looking for but it will give you a good idea of what size to aim for. Just be sure to check your current size against the sizing guide on the brand's website.
  • Returns & exchanges are much faster these days, at GYM NASTY we offer free returns and exchanges within 30 days, so if they're not the perfect fit, then we'll happily exchange them for another size.

Buying Muay Thai Shorts in the UK

Buying Muay Thai shorts in the UK is just as easy as anywhere else in the world. There are a few physical stores depending on where you live, but you'll find much more choice online.

Be sure to check where they're based so you can get fast delivery, if they're based overseas it may take longer and you may not fit within their returns policy due to the time it takes to ship.

Don't forget, we offer fast, free shipping on all of our Muay Thai gear along with 30-days free returns.

Buying Muay Thai Shorts In Thailand

Travelling to Thailand to train Muay Thai? You're not going to have a problem finding some shorts in the home of Muay Thai. Even if you take a walk down Khaosan road, you'll see street stalls selling them. BUT, you're going to pay over the odds for them.

The best place in Thailand to buy Muay Thai gear is ActionZone. A small shop in the centre of Bangkok, a short distance away from the National Stadium and MBK mall.

They have all of the Muay Thai gear you could ever dream of, whatever they don't have they can order for you or offer an alternative. I originally went in there looking for Twins gear, sadly they didn't have the colour I wanted and I wasn't staying in Bangkok long so couldn't wait for a delivery.

I tried on a new brand that they had in stock and just fell in love with the fit and feel. The gloves and shin guards I picked up were Mongkol, check out our review of the Mongkol gloves and shin guards

The best way to get in touch with ActionZone prior to your visit is through their Instagram and you can find all of their contact details there: ActionZone Bangkok Instagram
